Mrs. Slocombe refuses to sell a new line of underwear, but both Captain Peacock and Mr. Rumbold dismiss her complaints, and Mr. Grainger still resents her for taking up half of the floor space for the ladies' department. Then Mr. Grace arrives to announce his plans to marry someone in the store and invites Mrs. Slocomb to tea to discuss a ring. Everyone automatically thinks Mr. Grace will propose, and Mrs. Slocombe dresses up for the occasion while the staff wonders what the future would hold with Mrs. Slocombe in charge.
