Hockey is on the minds of Avonlea residents. In her role as Superintendent of Schools, Muriel Stacey, bringing news from the Board of Education, institutes a mandatory Physical Education class, the suggested sport of choice being hockey. The Physical Education class is against the wishes of Hetty, who sees the class as taking away other more important academically inclined subjects, and Sara, who doesn't know how to skate.
